House Love At First Sight

It was on Memorial Day weekend last year that we saw this house listed for sale on Trulia. It was in a nearby neighborhood we had been "stalking," it was within our price range, it had all our "must-haves," and it had just the right amount of potential. Our Realtor showed it to us later that afternoon. We put in an offer the next day and found out the offer was accepted the day after that. We went from casually browsing to buying a house practically overnight.

We've done a lot of work so far and we have a lot more to go, but I often get so caught up in the urge to fix everything all at once that I forget to take the time to reflect on everything we've accomplished in one short year. It's hardly the same house anymore…and that's a good thing, I think.

Here's a montage of the house as it was listed one year ago and how it stands today.

Exterior changes: Powerwash, new paint (blue, gray, & white), new white steel door, new white vinyl windows downstairs (new windows upstairs coming soon!)

Backyard: Powerwash & new paint, new bay windows, cleared out monkey grass, vines and small trees, repaired broken lattice and play set.

A lot of people think we're joking when we say it will be years before we're done fixing up the house, but it's true.  For every project we've finished, there is an equally daunting project we still have to accomplish (the kitchen, bathrooms, third bedroom, landscaping, etc.). Let's blame HGTV for making us feel as though we can "makeover" an entire house in a short hour-long "episode." Today, though, I will remember this house as it was one year ago when we first saw it, and how far it's come.

Guest Room Finishing Touches

With Tommie's parents headed our way for Thanksgiving, it was time to put some finishing touches on the guest room and bath. (The color looks different in pictures--it's light lavender with a yellow accent wall.)

Some recent updates to the guest room include a yellow, gray, and tan chevron curtain bought for $15 at Target.  We also put a desk in the corner so people can set up a laptop if they need to do work.

I thought this floating shelf would be a cute way to display some reading material for guests, like local magazines.  (We're getting another small floating shelf to put above it to better fill the wall.)

The guest bath also has a couple new features like a chrome hotel-style curved shower rod (I don't know why, but I love how spacious these things make the shower!).

There is also a updated large silver mirror I bought for $20 on Craigslist, and a nice new chrome towel rack with shelves.

Our guests may have one of the best spots in the house so far!

It's Always Sunny in the Guest Room

At first glance, it might seem like we're trying to blind our guests when they walk into the room and are greeted by a bright and sunny yellow accent wall.  What can I say?  All this power of picking out whatever colors we want/like has created a of couple color crazed fools.

The yellow wall (Olympic Icon in Del Sol) even scared us at first but we're digging it now that the rest of the room is softened by a light lavender (Valspar Signature in Lavender Heather. Beware, Valspar's Signature paints offer great color choices but they are "low" VOC and "low" apparently means the room will stink for a month.  I wouldn't use this line of paint in a room you can't close off and leave a window open).

Hopefully our guests warm up to the space and don't go blind first.  It's still better than what my sister said we should do:  Pink glitter zebra print.

We have a small dresser tucked into the closet (where I took down the bi-fold doors) so it doesn't take up floor space.

We'll get some new curtains, art on the walls, and have it all cozy for company.  Don't forget your sunglasses!
